An urgent expense needs a quick decision—but not a rushed loan
A medical bill, essential home repair or unexpected travel expense can arrive before payday. A short-term personal loan may help cover a genuine one-off expense, but quick access to money does not make every offer affordable or suitable.
The key question is not only “Can I get the money?” It is “Can I repay it on time without borrowing again next month?”
This checklist is designed for borrowers in India who are comparing short-term personal loans or digital loan offers.
First, check whether you need to borrow the full amount
Write down the expense, the amount due and the date it must be paid. Ask the service provider whether a payment plan is available, check whether an employer advance is possible, or consider using available savings while retaining a reasonable emergency buffer. Avoid using a high-cost loan for a cost that can be delayed safely or negotiated.
If borrowing is still necessary, calculate the smallest amount that covers the essential expense.
10 checks before applying for a short-term personal loan
1. Confirm the actual lender
A mobile app or website may be a loan service provider rather than the bank or NBFC that actually lends the money. Identify the regulated lender named in the offer and verify its credentials independently. Do not rely only on an app's logo, advertisements or claims of “guaranteed approval.”
2. Read the Key Facts Statement (KFS)
For covered retail term loans, the KFS should make important loan terms easier to compare. Review the APR, repayment schedule and charges before accepting the contract. Save the KFS, sanction letter and loan agreement.
3. Compare APR—not just the headline rate
APR represents the annualised cost of credit including applicable charges covered by the calculation. Two loans with similar advertised interest rates may have different total costs because of fees. Ask for the amount you will receive and the total amount you must repay.
4. Calculate the EMI against your real budget
Use the Make Loan Eazy EMI calculator. Include existing EMIs and essential spending when deciding what you can afford. Do not use a bonus, uncertain overtime or a hoped-for future loan as the basis for repayment.
5. Check the repayment date
Make sure the EMI date follows your normal income date with enough margin for bank holidays or salary delays. Keep enough money in the repayment account and understand what happens if an auto-debit fails.
6. Understand all fees and penalties
Check processing fees, GST on applicable fees, late-payment charges, mandate-return fees and any prepayment or foreclosure charge. Confirm whether any fee is deducted from disbursement, because the amount credited may be lower than the loan amount sanctioned.
7. Look at the full repayment schedule
Don't judge the loan only by the first EMI. Check the due dates, number of instalments and total amount payable. If the offer's repayment schedule is unclear, ask the lender for written clarification before accepting.
8. Check permissions and privacy
A lending app should explain why it needs personal data and obtain the required consent. Be cautious if an app asks for unnecessary access to contacts, call logs, photos or other unrelated information. Never share your OTP, PIN or banking password with an agent.
9. Avoid submitting many applications at once
Repeated full applications can create multiple credit enquiries and make it harder to keep track of offers. First shortlist lenders using published eligibility criteria, then apply selectively. Approval is never guaranteed, and an agent cannot legitimately promise that a lender will ignore its credit policy.
10. Make a repayment plan before accepting
Identify the income source that will cover every instalment. If you already have overdue EMIs or are considering a new loan mainly to repay another loan, pause and contact your existing lender to discuss the amount due and available options. A new loan can shift the due date without solving the underlying shortfall.
A simple cost example
Suppose you borrow ₹30,000 for six months at a hypothetical 18% annual reducing-balance rate. The estimated EMI would be about ₹5,268, with total interest of about ₹1,608. This illustration excludes processing fees, GST and other charges; it is not a quote or an offer from any lender.
Before deciding, compare the same principal and tenure across offers and include all applicable charges. Use the loan calculator to test an amount and repayment period that fit your budget.
Warning signs to take seriously
Pause if an offer:
- Promises guaranteed approval before checking your profile.
- Asks you to pay an individual agent's personal UPI account to “release” the loan.
- Does not clearly identify the actual lender.
- Hides the KFS, APR, repayment schedule or loan agreement until after acceptance.
- Pressures you to act immediately or threatens to contact people in your phone.
- Requests OTPs, PINs or remote access to your phone.
For digital loans, the RBI's guidelines set requirements around disclosures, consent, disbursal and the responsibilities of regulated lenders. Read the RBI digital lending guidelines.
Short-term loan alternatives to compare
Depending on the situation, consider an employer salary advance, a payment plan directly with the provider, using part of available savings, or asking your current bank about an existing pre-approved offer. Each option has its own costs and conditions; compare them rather than assuming one is always better.
A credit card cash advance or borrowing from another app can also carry significant costs, so do not treat it as automatically cheaper.
FAQs
Can I get a short-term personal loan on the same day?
Some lenders offer digital processing, but timing depends on verification, eligibility, bank processing and the lender's procedures. Do not assume that an advertisement guarantees same-day disbursal.
Is a short-term loan app safe?
The app name alone does not establish safety. Verify the actual lender, read the KFS and privacy terms, and confirm that repayments go to the lender through the stated official channel.
Will applying affect my credit score?
A lender may make a credit enquiry as part of an application, and credit enquiries can be reflected in your credit report. Check eligibility first and avoid unnecessary multiple applications.
What if I cannot pay the next EMI?
Contact the lender before the due date, explain the situation and request written information about available options and charges. Do not ignore the instalment or assume another loan will solve the issue.
The takeaway
A short-term personal loan should be a bridge over a temporary cash gap—not a recurring way to fund monthly expenses. Verify the lender, compare APR and total repayment, and proceed only when the EMI fits your real budget.
