Start by checking whether the debit truly failed
An EMI may fail for reasons other than insufficient funds: a mandate issue, incorrect account details, account restrictions, technical processing failure or a mismatch in the debit presentation. The precise reason should come from the bank or lender, not guesswork.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Check the bank statement and SMS/app alerts for the debit attempt.
- Note the date, amount, mandate reference and any return reason displayed.
- Check the lender's account ledger to see whether the instalment is unpaid.
- Contact both the lender and bank using official channels; ask each for its transaction reference and reason code.
- Ask whether a retry is scheduled before making a manual payment, to reduce the risk of duplicate payment.
- If you pay manually, retain the receipt and check the ledger afterwards.
- If the mandate needs correction, use the lender's formal re-registration process.
Never share OTPs, PINs or full credentials with anyone claiming to fix a mandate.
Can you challenge charges?
Ask the lender to explain each charge and identify the applicable loan-agreement or service-charge term. RBI guidance says penal charges for non-compliance must be reasonable, disclosed and not levied as penal interest added to the rate. If you believe the charge is incorrect, submit a written complaint with the bank's failed-debit evidence and lender statement.
FAQs
Should I pay again immediately?
First confirm whether the lender received any payment and whether a retry is pending. Then follow the official instructions for the exact outstanding amount.
Does a technical failure guarantee no credit impact?
No guarantee. Document the evidence, resolve the payment promptly and ask the lender to correct any inaccurate reporting.
Where can I find the mandate details?
Check your bank's mandate or e-mandate section, payment alerts, and the lender's account documents. The exact interface varies by bank.
