Why a late salary credit can trigger an EMI bounce
An auto-debit can fail if the required balance is not available when the mandate is presented. A delayed salary credit may be the cause, but the lender's ledger determines whether the EMI remains unpaid and what amount is currently due.
The first 24-hour checklist
- Check the bank statement for the failed debit and salary credit.
- Open the lender's official app or call its verified customer-care number.
- Request the exact amount required to regularise the account.
- Pay through an authorised method and save proof.
- Ask whether the mandate will be presented again; avoid assuming a second debit will or will not happen.
- If the failure appears technical, keep the bank's reference number and ask the bank to investigate.
Do not send money to a recovery caller's personal UPI ID. Use payment instructions independently verified through the lender.
Prevent the next bounce
Set a reminder several days before the EMI date and maintain the EMI amount plus a reasonable buffer where possible. If salary routinely arrives after the due date, ask the lender whether a due-date change is available. Any change must be confirmed by the lender; it is not automatic.
Check whether the mandate is active, the linked account is correct and there are no restrictions on debits. If you changed bank accounts, follow the lender's official process to update the mandate before the next due date.
Example budget
If take-home salary is ₹42,000, the EMI is ₹11,000 and essential monthly costs are ₹23,000, only ₹8,000 remains before irregular costs and savings. A small buffer may help with timing, but if the budget is structurally short, contact the lender early rather than borrowing again to cover every instalment.
FAQs
Will the lender wait until my salary comes?
Do not assume it will. Check the agreement, due date and lender's process, and communicate early.
Can I stop the mandate to avoid a bounce?
Stopping an authorised debit does not cancel the loan obligation. Discuss a legitimate repayment arrangement with the lender instead.
Can a new loan solve the problem?
A new EMI can worsen the shortfall. Compare total cost and affordability first.
