Why two EMIs can become a cash-flow trap
When one EMI remains unpaid and the next due date arrives, the amount needed to regularise the account may be higher than one instalment. Charges or contractual overdue interest may also apply. The lender's current statement—not an assumption—should determine the exact amount.
Make a catch-up plan
- Ask for the current amount due. Request a loan ledger showing the overdue instalment, current EMI and any disclosed charges.
- Protect essential spending. List rent, food, utilities, medicines, transport and dependants' costs first.
- Contact the lender early. Explain the shortfall and ask whether a formal repayment arrangement or due-date adjustment is available. Do not assume it will be granted.
- Avoid duplicate payments. Confirm whether a debit retry is pending before making a second payment.
- Avoid high-cost emergency borrowing. Compare the total cost and next-month impact of any alternative.
- Set the next debit up for success. Correct the mandate or change the budgeting process after confirming the lender's instructions.
Example
Suppose the regular EMI is ₹12,000 and one instalment remains unpaid. The next month's EMI is also ₹12,000. The basic instalments alone total ₹24,000, before any applicable charges or overdue interest. If take-home pay is ₹45,000, that leaves ₹21,000 before all household costs. Do not assume the lender will accept partial payment as full regularisation; get the arrangement in writing.
What to avoid
Do not ignore calls or notices, borrow from an unverified app, falsify income documents, or pay a recovery agent's personal account. Communicate through verified lender channels and preserve receipts.
FAQs
Can I pay half now and half later?
Only treat that as an arrangement if the lender confirms how it will be allocated and whether the account will remain overdue.
Should I stop the auto-debit?
Stopping a mandate does not cancel the EMI obligation. Ask the lender how to avoid duplicate debits while resolving the account.
Will a new personal loan solve the problem?
It may add another EMI and worsen the cash gap. Assess alternatives and affordability before applying.
