Can you get another personal loan while an EMI is overdue?
It is possible that a lender may consider an application, but an overdue EMI is a meaningful risk signal and approval is not assured. TransUnion CIBIL says lenders review recent missed payments, overdue amounts and debt burden when assessing applications. Individual lenders set their own eligibility criteria.
What lenders may review
- Current overdue and recent repayment history.
- Monthly net income and stability of salary credits.
- Existing EMI commitments and other liabilities.
- Credit report, utilisation and recent enquiries.
- Employment documents and consistency of bank statements.
- Requested amount, tenure and ability to repay.
No single CIBIL score or EMI-to-income percentage guarantees approval across lenders.
What to do before applying
- Ask the existing lender for the exact overdue and a statement.
- Pay or agree a formal arrangement through authorised channels.
- Check the credit report for errors.
- Calculate whether a new EMI fits after essential household expenses.
- Compare any offer using the KFS, APR, processing fees, total repayment and late-payment terms.
- Apply selectively only after you understand the reasons for the current overdue.
Example: income is not the same as borrowing capacity
If monthly take-home pay is ₹70,000 and current EMIs total ₹28,000, the borrower already commits 40% of take-home pay to EMIs. A proposed ₹9,000 EMI would raise that to ₹37,000, leaving ₹33,000 for living expenses, insurance, family needs and savings. This is an illustration—not a universal lender cut-off.
Be careful with “guaranteed approval” claims
Avoid paying advance fees to secure a loan, sharing OTPs or allowing unnecessary access to contacts/photos. Verify the regulated lender, read the KFS and check the grievance contact before proceeding. A new loan that merely covers an overdue instalment can shift rather than solve a cash-flow problem.
FAQs
Will all lenders reject an overdue applicant?
Not necessarily, but policies differ. Do not assume approval is likely without reviewing the account and your affordability.
Should I borrow from one app to pay another lender?
Compare the total cost and risk carefully. Repeated short-term borrowing can make the next month's cash flow worse.
What if the overdue is caused by an error?
Gather the bank statement, debit reference and lender ledger, then submit a written dispute through official channels.
